Total Hip Replacement

What is Hip Replacement?

Hip Replacement is a surgical procedure used to relieve pain and restore function in a damaged or worn-out hip joint. It involves removing the affected parts of the hip and replacing them with artificial components made of metal, ceramic, or plastic. The ball at the top of the thigh bone (femur) is replaced with a metal or ceramic ball, and the socket in the pelvis (acetabulum) is fitted with a synthetic cup. This artificial joint helps restore smooth movement and significantly reduces hip pain during daily activities.

How Does the Need for Hip Replacement Arise?

Hip Replacement is typically recommended when the hip joint is severely damaged by conditions such as osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, avascular necrosis, or fractures. Patients may suffer from chronic pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility that interferes with walking, standing, or sleeping. When conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, or injections fail to offer relief, and the damage continues to affect quality of life, Hip Replacement becomes the most effective option to improve function and alleviate discomfort.

Treatment for Hip Issues with Hip Replacement

When the hip joint is beyond repair due to disease or injury, Hip Replacement is considered the most effective treatment. The procedure involves removing the damaged bone and cartilage from the hip joint and inserting prosthetic parts to recreate its structure and function. The new joint provides smoother movement, improved alignment, and long-term pain relief. It is particularly beneficial for individuals whose hip problems prevent them from carrying out routine activities despite trying other therapies.

Preparing for Hip Replacement Surgery

Prior to surgery, a detailed assessment is done, including physical exams and imaging such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRI to evaluate the extent of joint damage. The orthopedic surgeon will explain the procedure, benefits, risks, and recovery timeline. Patients may be advised to stop certain medications and begin exercises to strengthen nearby muscles. Preparing the home environment for recovery—by arranging assistance, using raised chairs, or installing grab bars—helps ensure a safer post-surgery transition.

What Happens During Hip Replacement Surgery?

Hip Replacement surgery is performed under general or spinal anesthesia. An incision is made over the hip to access the joint, and the damaged femoral head is removed. A metal stem is inserted into the femur and topped with a ball that fits into a synthetic socket implanted in the pelvis. This new joint mimics the natural ball-and-socket structure of the hip. The surgery usually takes 1.5 to 2 hours. After securing the components, the surgeon closes the incision and applies a sterile dressing.

Post-Surgery Recovery for Hip Replacement

After surgery, patients are observed for a few hours before being discharged with detailed home care instructions. The hip is supported with a dressing, and medications are prescribed for pain and inflammation. Ice therapy is often used to manage swelling. Physical therapy begins early to help regain mobility and prevent stiffness. Many patients walk with the help of a walker or crutches and gradually resume daily activities in 6–8 weeks. However, heavy lifting and high-impact movements should be avoided during the healing period.

Rehabilitation and Long-Term Recovery for Hip Replacement

Rehabilitation is key to the long-term success of Hip Replacement. Physical therapy is introduced in stages—starting with gentle movements and progressing to muscle strengthening and gait training. Over the next 3 to 6 months, patients regain mobility, balance, and the ability to perform daily tasks like dressing or walking unassisted. Most individuals report significant pain relief and improved quality of life. To maintain the implant's longevity, patients should avoid high-impact sports and attend regular follow-up visits with their surgeon.
